Greece Lotto Review
Greece Lotto (ΛΟΤΤΟ) is probably one of the most popular games from the land of Sirtaki and endless beaches. This is a lottery with a lengthy history and a couple of noteworthy jackpots. Lotto originated back in 1990, and since then, ticket costs have remained famously low. This is just one of the reasons why people like Lotto so much.
Lotto is organized by OPAP – the Greek Organization of Football Prognostics. OPAP has a lengthy and prolific history that started way back in 1958. Before moving on to national lotteries and as its name suggests, OPAP was responsible for football game betting (or as Americans would call it – soccer).
The game is a traditional draw-style lottery, but a couple of characteristics make Lotto tickets highly desirable. For a start, there are two weekly drawings. There’s also a minimum guaranteed jackpot characterized by a tendency to grow in the event of no winners.
Have we gotten you interested yet? Here are a couple of additional essentials you need to know about the Greek Lotto.
How to Play Greece Lotto
Playing Lotto isn’t rocket science.
Choose six numbers from a pool of 49. That’s right; Lotto follows one of the most prominent draw-style lottery formats in the world. A single ticket costs 0.50 euros per line, and it’s up to you to decide if you’re going to use your numbers or go for a quick pick ticket.
Apart from the six main numbers, you have to choose an additional digit. The additional number isn’t needed to win the jackpot. It has an impact on the second prize tier, for which you’d need to have a correct combination of 5 + 1 digits.
Players can also choose alternative gameplay methods that potentially improve the odds of winning a prize.
Lotto offers a standard system gameplay opportunity. In the case of system play, you select and mark more numbers on the play slip than the ones required to win a prize. You can choose anywhere between nine and 16 numbers as a part of a Greek Lotto system.
Systems make it more likely for you to claim a prize because a single ticket contains several numerical combinations. Also, system play increases the chance of claiming multiple lower-tier prizes.
There are also permutation systems, full development systems, and several other more advanced Lotto gameplay options. You can discover the rules and the ways to fill out the play slip on the Lotto official website. OPAP retail venues and agencies also feature the information needed to choose the gameplay method you’re most comfortable with.
Drawings take place each Wednesday and Saturday. You can either buy a ticket for an upcoming drawing or select a ticket that will be entered in multiple consecutive lottery draws (up to 74).
There is one final gameplay opportunity we need to discuss, and that’s the additional PROTO game.
Proto is an add-on game that you may decide to activate at the time of buying your Lotto ticket. The Proto option is available at the bottom of the play slip – mark it with a pen. To play Proto, you have to mark a seven-digit number. The terminal at the retail agency can generate a random seven-digit number, as well. There are six prize tiers that Proto players can claim on top of the main Lotto prize.
Tickets for Lotto and Proto can be bought throughout Greece. There are no restrictions concerning the nationality of the players, as long as they’re of legal age.
Greece Lotto Prizes and Payouts
Lotto has a minimum guaranteed jackpot of 300,000 euros for those who guess all six numbers. In the event of no winner, the sum will roll over towards the next drawing. The odds of matching the six winning numbers are one in 13.98 million.
The biggest jackpot in the history of the game came after a long streak with no winners back in 2010. At the time, the top prize had reached a massive 7.5 million euro. A single ticket holder won the entire amount. The second jackpot of seven million euros fell just one year later.
Those who match the five main numbers and the one additional will win the second prize of 50,000 euros. Matching the five main numbers only results in an award of 1,500 euros, four numbers – 30 euro and three numbers produce the lowest prize of 1.5 euros.
Proto has seven prize tiers. Matching the whole seven-digit number produces the top prize, but it’s not a fixed amount. This is the only pari-mutuel Proto tier, while all of the others provide fixed awards. Matching the first six digits of the winning number produces a prize of 25,000 euros, and matching the first two or the last two digits of the winning number results in the lowest Proto prize of two euro.
Keep in mind that all lottery prizes in Greece are subjected to an income tax. Awards of up to 500 euro are taxed at 15 percent, and for more substantial rewards, the income tax goes up to 20 percent.
