4D Review
The Malaysian government is the sole authority responsible for licensing lotto operators in the country. Bearing in mind the vibrancy of lotto in Malaysia, the country has been facing an increased push to license more operators so as to even out the playing field. One of the draw games that has attracted a huge following in the country is the 4D.
As the name clearly indicates, 4D refers to 4 digits. The player chooses 4 digits ranging from 0000 to 9999. During the drawing, 23 numbers are drawn and if the player matches at least one number out of those drawn, he wins a prize. The odds in this game are fixed.

How to Play Malaysia 4D
There are two ways you can participate in this lotto game. These are:
Standard Entry
Here, you choose a specific number such as 2347. The standard entry has 2 further divisions, BIG and SMALL. If you bet on SMALL, you can only win the first, second, and third prizes. However, if you bet on BIG, you win the first prize, the second prize, and the third prize plus a special prize or consultation prize. For each standard entry, the cost is 1 Malaysian Ringgit (RM).
That said, the SMALL bet guarantees you high winnings compared to the BIG bet. However, the BIG bet has in addition to the 1st places, 10 other special numbers which reward players with RM 180 for a single bet of RM 1. There are also 10 consolation numbers that pay RM 60 for a single bet of RM1.
4D Roll
4D Roll substitutes any single one of the 4 digits of your winning number with the letter R. In this case, R is used to denote the number of digits ranging from 0 all the way to 9. For instance, one of the digits in the number we have selected above, 2347, can be substituted with R to yield R347. What this means is, you have 10 ordinary entries which are 0347, 1347, 2347, 3347, 4347, 5347, 6347, 7347, 8347, and 9347. Note that the R can be in any position such as 2R47, 23R7, or 234R.
There is Roll 1 and Roll 4. In Roll 1, you choose the last digits of your winning 4D number and your first digit will be represented by R which ranges from 0 to 9. In the Roll 4 variant, you choose the first 3 digits and then the last digit will be represented by an R. since each 4D Roll yields 10 entries, the minimum bet or cost per play is RM 10.
Insurance Permutation/i-Perm
This type of entry is computed using the possible permutations of any 4D number. For instance, our number above, 2347, can have 24 permutations such as 2347, 2374, 3274, 7423, etc. under the i-Perm, you can choose the number of permutations you want which can be 4, 6, 12, or 24.
If you choose 4 permutations, you will get 4 sets of numbers which cost RM1 per number, hence for the set of 4 numbers, you will receive 4. The same thing applies to 6, 12, and 24 number permutations.
In all the number selections, you can either select manually or use a Quick Pick option. For the Quick Pick option, the computer selects for you at random. It is important to note that none of the two methods chosen above guarantees you an automatic win.
4D Providers in Malaysia
The government of Malaysia has licensed 3 independent private companies also known as Number Forecast Operators to offer 4D. These are Magnum 4D, Sports Toto, and Da Ma Cai.
Magnum 4D – This operator offers players the classic 4D game where they choose a 4D digit number and the respective amounts they want to bet. This was the first company to be licensed to offer the 4D game.
Da Ma Cai – In Mandarin, the name of this operator literally means Pan-Malaysian Lottery. In December 2016, this company introduced a mobile betting platform known as dmcGO which operates on both iOS and Android apps.
Sports Toto – This is a member of a Berjaya group of companies and was incorporated in Malaysia in 1969. It was privatized in 1985 and is currently a wholly-owned subsidiary.
The Odds of Winning 4D
Malaysia 4D drawings are held on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. However, there are times when a special draw is held. This is usually done on Tuesdays. For an operator to hold a special draw, they must be authorized and endorsed by the Ministry. Most of the times you will hear about the special draws is during events such as Chinese New Year and birthdays of Sultans and Rulers.
When a special draw is coming up, you will be notified at the ticket counter and be allowed to take part 7 days before. Special days are not usually simultaneously conducted by all the operators hence it is important to check with the operator of any upcoming special draws.
Winning with BIG Forecast
As mentioned earlier, the big forecast gives you the highest chance of winning in Malaysia 4D, but the prize at stake is comparatively small. During the draw, a total of 23 numbers will be chosen and spread in 5 different winning categories. 3 numbers will be allotted as winning numbers in the first, second, and third categories respectively. The remaining 20 will be divided into two, 10 numbers for the special prize category, and the other 10 for the consolation prize category. The prizes in the BIG forecast are as follows:
- First prize category wins RM 2,500
- Second prize category is allocated RM 1,000
- Third prize category is allocated RM 500.
- Special prize category gets RM 180
- Consolation prize category gets RM 60
Winning with SMALL Forecast
The prizes here are higher in value compared to the ones in the BIG foremost. However, winning with small forecasts is very difficult because the slots (1st, 2nd and 3rd) are few for winners to fill. Of the 23 numbers drawn, only 3 will be allocated to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize categories. In terms of the prizes, they are distributed as follows:
- First prize is allocated RM 3,500
- Second prize category is allocated RM 2,000
- The third prize category is allocated RM 1,000
