Can Lottery Employees Play the Lottery? For That Sudden Itch!
In short, Yes and No. I didn’t want to take you around the bush only to have you find out that unfortunately some lottery employees aren’t allowed to play the lottery! It’s true, but isn’t that the same as in any organization? If you’re working for a certain company, as an employee neither you nor your relatives can participate in any promotions or raffles held by the company that employs you. The same goes for the lottery too. Let’s look at the Terms and Conditions of some major lottery institutions, shall we?
Barbados Lottery Terms
Anyone under the age of 18 is not allowed to play. Apart from that, their lottery employees, relatives living under the same roof as the employees, certain vendor employees cannot play the Barbados Lottery games.
Lotto 6/49 Terms
According to their terms only the OLG lottery employees (full time, part-time, as well as any other individual who is on the OLG’s payroll) are not allowed to play the lottery. This restriction does not apply to the lottery employee’s spouse, relatives or friends even if they live under the same roof.
Atlantic Lottery Corporation Terms
This institution allows their employees to play the lottery! But when it comes to video lottery terminals, lottery employees who do the servicing of the terminals aren’t allowed to play the lottery.
British Columbia Lottery Corporation Terms
This institution has a “No Play at Work” policy that prohibits lottery retailers and their employees from playing the lottery.
National Lottery Ireland Terms
In their terms and condition, it clearly states that lottery employees are not allowed to play the lottery; they are not entitled to purchase tickets nor claim any prize money.
Mega Millions Lottery Terms
According to their terms, lottery employees, their relatives and friends living under the same roof as the employee cannot play the Mega Millions Lottery games.
Powerball Lottery Terms
Nope, not allowed either!
Why Lottery Employees Are Prohibited to Play the Lottery?
This question is rather a simple one to answer, but let me give you a simple example. Let’s assume that you have a treasure hunt at your place this afternoon, you’ve called a few guests to play. A member of your family hid all the treasures and even you aren’t sure where the treasures are hidden. Now, you’re hosting the game, should you be playing it? No. That would be rather weird. What happens if you play? If you win, everyone you invited would be thinking, “They just needed extra legs to run around looking for things they knew where they’d placed!” Even lottery officials feel the same. Of course lottery is a game of luck, so it doesn’t really matter who plays it, whether it’s the general public or the lottery employee, the problem arises when the lottery employee wins. It’s a simple as that, they call it fair play and I call it, if you want to play the lottery don’t be a lottery employee!
