Oz Lotto Review

With a low ticket price and a minimum guaranteed jackpot of two million Australian dollars, Oz Lotto is here to impress.

Managed by Tattersalls, the game has drawings every single Tuesday. This has been the way Oz Lotto has worked ever since its inception in February 1994.

Oz Lotto is established and licensed by the Australian government and that’s why it is a reliable lottery. It’s far from a scam and you can confidently purchase tickets without worrying about any repercussions. Ticket costs start at 1.45 Australian dollars.

In the very beginning, Oz Lotto had a 6 out of 45 format. On October 18, 2005, a 7th number was added to the jackpot requirement. It increased the number of prize tiers to a total of 7 – something that very few lotteries have to offer. In May 2022, Oz Lotto got yet another revamp and we’ll give you more details about it in the coming sections.

Oz Lotto presently holds the record for the biggest Australian lottery jackpot. The biggest prize ever fell in November 2011. The jackpot had reached 111.972 million dollars and it was split among three lucky winners.

Whatever you’re hoping to win from an international lottery, Oz Lotto does have a lot to offer. With such a small cost to pay for your ticket, the opportunity is definitely worth a try. Who knows, this may be your chance to become the next big lottery millionaire. Good luck!

The rules of playing Oz Lotto are simple – pick 7 numbers from a pool of 47 for your chance at winning the jackpot.

Apart from the 7 main numbers, each drawing features three supplementary numbers. The supplementary numbers play a role in determining the lower prize tiers. More information about this option will be provided in the detailed "Rules" section of the review.

Oz Lotto Rules

Oz Lotto is open to players from all parts of the world, as long as they’re aged 18 or older. Anyone interested in having a shot at winning the jackpot should choose 7 numbers from a pool of 47. Matching all numbers for the respective drawing will result in winning the Oz Lotto jackpot.

All of the prizes, including the Oz Lotto jackpot, are paid out in the form of a cash lump sum. There’s no income tax for lottery prizes in Australia – a nice added bonus. One thing to keep in mind if you’re an international player is that income taxes in your own country will apply to the amounts you’ve won by playing Oz Lotto.

All prize claims must be made within 12 months of the respective drawing. Amounts of up to 500 Australian dollars can be claimed from any retailer while larger sums will have to be requested in person. This rule is also valid for international players that may have won a bigger prize or the Oz Lotto jackpot.

The Odds of Winning Oz Lotto

The probability of winning the jackpot in Australia’s Oz Lotto is 1 in 62.89 million. To win the jackpot a player has to match all 7 numbers correctly.  If you do that, you can win the Oz Lotto guaranteed jackpot. With the latest rule change, the guaranteed jackpot has gone up from two to three million dollars. In the event of no winner, that amount will roll over towards the next drawing.

The odds of winning any prize in Oz Lotto are 1 in 51. While far from the most impressive in the world, these odds are definitely quite good.

Prize Category Matches Required Odds Based on 1 Game

7 3 winning numbers + 1 or 2 supplementary numbers 71:1

Oz Lotto Prize Breakdown

As already mentioned, Oz Lotto comes with a minimum guaranteed jackpot of three million Australian dollars. If there’s no winner for the respective drawing, the amount will roll over towards the upcoming one. As a result of this mechanism, the jackpots can reach some pretty impressive numbers.

The biggest jackpot ever was 111.97 million Australian dollars (83.61 million US dollars). There were four lucky winners that split the impressive amount for the November 6, 2012 drawing. The winners were from Melbourne, Canberra, and Townsville, as well as a syndicate consisting of 80 people from Victoria.

There have been several other cool jackpot-winning stories in Oz Lotto. A group of girlfriends from the Gold Coast won 70 million Australian dollars in 2013. The second biggest jackpot ever was split between the two tickets in 2009 and the amount was 106.5 million Australian dollars.

With its latest revamping, Oz Lotto got a bigger range of lower prize tiers. That has become possible through the addition of three supplementary numbers (they were previously two).

The second prize tier is reserved for those who match six numbers plus one of the supplementary digits. Other than the top two prizes, there are five additional tiers.

You can win the smallest prize by matching just three of the main numbers and one of the supplementary digits. If that happens, you’ll claim a reward of about 16 Australian dollars. That’s a pretty cool lowest prize as such rewards tend to be much lower for most other lotteries.

Keep in mind that to support the bigger range of prizes and the larger guaranteed jackpot, the Oz Lotto ticket cost has gone up from the previous 1.3 to 1.45 Australian dollars – not a major boost but still one worth mentioning!
